If you're outsourcing virtual assistant work, you've probably come across three destinations again and again: the Philippines, India and, increasingly, Kenya. Each has real strengths, and the "best" choice depends on your business, your time zone and the work you need done.
This article offers a balanced comparison. (Full disclosure: Bravura VA is based in Kenya, so we've tried to be especially fair to the alternatives.)
At a glance
| Factor | Kenya | Philippines | India |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time zone | UTC+3 (no DST) | UTC+8 (no DST) | UTC+5:30 (no DST) |
| English | Official language | Official language | Widely used in business; used officially by the central government alongside Hindi |
| Outsourcing industry | Emerging, growing quickly | Long-established BPO and VA industry | Long-established IT and BPO industry |
| Best overlap | UK, Europe, US East Coast mornings | Australia, Asia; US via night shifts | UK and Europe mornings; Asia, Australia |
The Philippines
The Philippines has one of the world's most established business process outsourcing industries, with decades of experience serving US clients, particularly in customer service and call centers. Its VA freelance community is large and well known.
Strengths:
- Strong English and familiarity with American culture and media
- A mature outsourcing ecosystem with many experienced professionals
- A large community of freelance VAs and agencies
- Well-established practices for working night shifts to cover US hours
Considerations:
- UTC+8 means live coverage of US business hours typically requires night shifts
- High demand from international clients means the most experienced talent can be competitive to secure
India
India has a massive talent pool and a world-leading IT and business services industry. It's especially strong for technical, data and back-office work.
Strengths:
- A very large, educated workforce with strong technical skills
- Mature IT, software and BPO industries
- English widely used in business and higher education
- Good overlap with UK mornings and Asian markets
Considerations:
- Regional variation in accents and communication styles means client-facing roles benefit from careful assessment
- As with any large market, provider quality varies widely
Kenya
Kenya is newer to international virtual assistance but growing quickly, with Nairobi at the center of East Africa's technology and business scene.
Strengths:
- English is an official language and widely used in education and business
- UTC+3 gives full-day overlap with the UK, strong overlap with Europe and morning overlap with the US East Coast
- A young, motivated workforce seeking long-term remote careers
- A technology-savvy business culture
- A modern data protection law (Data Protection Act, 2019)
Considerations:
- The outsourcing industry is younger, so there are fewer long-established providers to choose from
- Live coverage of US West Coast hours requires late shifts or asynchronous workflows
- As with any market, plan for infrastructure contingencies like backup internet
How to choose
Rather than asking "which country is best?", ask "which fits my situation best?"
If you're in the UK or Europe
Kenya and India both offer natural working-hour overlap. Kenya's 2-3 hour difference makes full-day collaboration especially easy.
If you're in the US and need live phone coverage
The Philippines has the most established culture of night-shift work for US clients. Kenya can work well for East Coast morning overlap plus overnight progress; India also offers overnight progress.
If you're in the US and most work is asynchronous
All three can work well. Overnight progress, work done while you sleep, becomes an advantage.
If you're in Australia
The Philippines and India have closer time zones. Kenya works with a "follow the sun" model: hand over in your afternoon, receive completed work the next morning.
If you need technical or data-heavy work
India's IT ecosystem is a strong fit, though skilled professionals can be found in all three countries.
If you want diversification
Many businesses spread support across more than one location to reduce risk and widen coverage.
What matters more than the country
Country-level comparisons only go so far. In practice, these factors matter far more:
- The individual's skills: communication, organization, judgment and tool knowledge
- The support structure: onboarding, quality checks and continuity
- Clear expectations: role scope, working hours and response times
- Security practices: access management and confidentiality
- Your own management: clear instructions, feedback and regular check-ins
A great assistant in any of these countries will outperform a poor match anywhere.
Wrapping up
The Philippines offers maturity and deep US familiarity. India offers scale and technical depth. Kenya offers strong English, a predictable time zone with excellent UK and useful US East Coast overlap, and a growing professional workforce.
